This 1967 122 arrived with some newer bits installed - a leather interior, relatively new paint, widened steel wheels and fresh tires but beneath this veneer was a neglected and tired old car with holes in the floors that had been poorly patched, holes in the battery box, paint over the trunk lock cylinder, and a number of other issues that, though distracting, wouldn't prevent it from being a reasonable daily driver. The current owner's intent was to have a fully restored 122 with a number of functional modifications that would enhance the car without significantly detracting from its period charm.
After seeing photos of the prior metal 'repairs,' he instructed us to replace as much metal as we could using new panels. To that end, 40% of the metal has been replaced - all floors, inner/mid/outer sills, box sections, trunk floor, quarters, fenders, nose, door skins. It took 6 front fenders - two of them new - to build 2 precisely matched and symmetrical fenders. Similarly, the perch for the exterior door handles on the new panels doesn't match the embossing of the originals, so this small area in each door was cut away and replaced with the same area taken from the original doors. All evidence of welded repairs was removed, both inside and out even though much of this work would be hidden by carpet, interior panels, or undercoating. After this, the body lines were corrected and eventually it was covered with several layers of single stage lacquer paint in original #94 Dark Green. The underside has been treated to Lizard Skin undercoating.
The B20 block conceals 2.6 liters' displacement with TT4 cam, steel gears, H beam rods, forged pistons, VCS (Volvo Competition Service) manifolds and air filter housing with 45DCOE carbs. An appropriately modified head with oversized valves, 1.65 roller rockers, oversized valves and custom valve springs is fitted using ARP hardware.
Transmission is an M410 perched on a custom fabricated support member. Fitted between that and the engine is an 11lb chromoly flywheel fitted with a heavy duty clutch cover and 6 puck disk.
Proper 4/2/1 exhaust header is Jet Hot coated and connects to a fully tig welded stainless exhaust.
Dual triangular brake system with cross drilled vented front rotors and 4 piston calipers, 4.30 ES rear axle with Quaife limited slip and disk brakes. The chassis is reinforced for ipd front and rear bars and uses single rate springs, Bilstein shocks, rubber bushings, Panasports with 195 65 Michelins. All suspension components powder coated.
NOS first generation Cibie H4 Halogen headlights and NOS Cibie Super Oscar driving lamps. Low, high and aux circuits on dedicated fuses and relays tucked away out of sight, original wiring replaced with appropriate gauge. Hand tailored German velour carpet, oe interior skins and panels, 2 layers of Dynamat throughout plus additional open cell foam inside the roof. Hidden antennas for am/fm/satellite radio with Bluetooth/USB/AUX and phone connections. Nardi Mahogany steering wheel. Latch hardware, intake manifolds, valve cover, throttle linkage and various other bits ceramic coated.
